What is the ACT?

The ACT is a test designed for high school students in 10th, 11th, and/or 12th grade. It gives schools and districts the information they need to help students be successful after high school. The scores on tests show what students have learned in high school and give colleges and universities great information for recruiting, advising, placing, and keeping students.

The goal of the ACT test is to find out if a high school student is ready for college and to give colleges a single piece of information that they can use to compare all applicants. College admissions officers will look at your GPA, the classes you took in high school, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays.

Why is the ACT Important?

As part of the process for getting into college, many schools ask for ACT or SAT scores. Your ACT score is a very important part of your application to college.

Overall, if you do well on the ACT and/or SAT, you will have more options for going to college and paying for it.

Should I take the ACT now or later?

Most high school students take either the ACT or the SAT, or both, in the spring or fall of their junior or senior year. If you need to raise your score before you apply to college, you should give yourself enough time to retake the test. Every year, the ACT test is given all over the country in September, October, December, February, April, June, and July.

What does the ACT test?

There are four parts to the ACT: English, Reading, Math, and Science.

The optional 40-minute Writing Test is also a part of the ACT. It is recommended to take the ACT Writing Test as some colleges require it.

How long does the ACT last?

It takes 2 hours and 55 minutes to finish the ACT. If you choose to take the ACT with Essay, the test will last 3 hours and 35 minutes.

How do you score the ACT?

Each part of the ACT is given a score between 1 and 36 points. Your total ACT score is the average of your four section scores, which are also on a scale from 1 to 36. If you take the ACT with Writing Test, the Writing Test will give you a separate score.

Which test should I take? The ACT or SAT?

Most colleges and universities will accept scores from either the SAT or the ACT. They do not prefer one test over the other. Still, more and more students who want to go to college are taking both the SAT and the ACT. Since the SAT changed in 2016, it is now easier than ever to study for both tests at the same time and get good scores on both.

How can I sign up to take the ACT?

The last day to sign up for the ACT is about five weeks before the test. You can sign up for the ACT through your school counselor, or you can do it online at the ACT website.
